History
THE SPLENDOR OF
BIG NAMES

An exclusive location with a commitment to exceptional quality: Wohllebengasse, built in 1789 on the grounds of a former hospital, owes its name to the Viennese mayor and aristocrat Stephan Edler von Wohlleben.
At the end of the 18th century, the area was characterized by upper-class residences in the late-historic style. Still today, many of them are preserved in the area of the former hospital gardens. Historically, the most interesting building on the street is a palace, built in 1804 for the affluent aristocratic family of Johann Pálffy von Erdöd, Field Marshal and Palatine of Hungary. The palace’s large interior was also used as a riding school for the family.
The exclusive developments of this area are reflected in the New Prestige project on Wohllebengasse 3-5 which maintains a dignified, historic appearance.

Stephan Edler von Wohlleben was born in 1751 and ennobled by Archduke Franz I in the year 1801. A few years later he became mayor of Vienna. On his own merits, he was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the St. Stephan’s Congregation and the (civil) Honorary Cross in silver, both in 1814. He was a member of the citizens‘ militia in Vienna and honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts.
